Typically, deuterated solvents are used for lock, shim, and referencing in routine NMR spectroscopy. For the above-mentioned catalytic in situ studies, deuterated solvents or even an addition of deuterated solvent to the system are not acceptable either for monetary reasons when working with considerable solvent volumes or to avoid unwanted isotope effects.
