Abel Powder or Picric Powder. A mixt for priming PA(picric acid) invented in 1869 by Sir F. A. Abel Amm pi crate 40 K nitrate 60% (Ref 1). French used a similar compn called Brugere(poudre). In Ref 2, the compn of picric powder is given as Amm picrate 43 A K nitrate 57% vel solid.dec without melting brisance — less than TNT ballistic strength ca 75% TNT deton rate ca 3500 m/s vs 6900 for TNT sensitivity to impact, rifle bullet and initiation — comparable to tetryl stability and compatibility with metals — comp arable to Amm picrate. Tetramethylolcyclopentanone (III) is an intermediate product in the above reaction chain. It can be nitrated to give a tetranitrate, m.p. 74°C (nitropentanone). Friedrich and Flick report the explosion heat of nitropentanone as 820 kcal/kg, /= 10,680 m and the detonation rate 7940 m/sec at a density of 1.59 g/cm3. This explosive is more powerful than C-4 plastique explosive. With its high detonation rate and great bristance, it should find some use. It is more sensitive than most explosives obtained from AN, since it is not AN but hydrazine nitrate. This explosive liquid is very corrosive and this should be taken into affect when suitable containers are rounded up in which to place the explosive. Hydrazine is a hard chemical to find. Used as a rocket fuel, obtaining this chemical could arouse suspicion. It is used as a boiler deoxygenator and perhaps could be procured for this purpose. The manufacture is simple with the AN prills being dissolved in the hydrazine by small additions with good ventilation, as ammonia gas is produced by the reaction. [Pg.68]
