Determination of low-molecular-weight alkyl sulphate

Battaglini et al. [24] showed that the methyl sulphate ion, CHsOSOf, was almost completely hydrolysed by boiling for 30 min in 0.5 M potassium 

Weigh a sample containing about 3 g active in a round-bottomed flask. 

Add exactly 50 ml 0.5 M potassium hydroxide in ethylene glycol, attach a reflux condenser and boil for 30 min. Run a blank experiment alongside. 

Cool and titrate first to phenolphthalein and then to bromophenol blue with 0.5 M hydrochloric acid. 

Carry out a parallel experiment on a similar sample but omitting the boiling.
