Deoxidizing agent

Silicon in the form of ferrosilicon is used in large quantities as a deoxidizing agent in steel manufacture. Silicon steel alloys are utilized as dynamo and transformer plates due to their soft magnetic properties, as machine tool steels, as spring steels and as corrosion resistant casting steels for chemical plant. 

Use Degasifying and deoxidizing agents, to harden steel (in trace quantities), to increase conductivity of copper, turbojet engines. 

Hyposulfurous Acid—HaSO,—66.—Hydrosulfurom aoid—ls an unstable body only known in solution, obtained by the action of zinc upon solution of sulfui-ous acid. It is a powerful bleaching and deoxidizing agent. 

As long as there are no stronger deoxidation agents, silicon (Si) and oxygen (O2) tend to form hard silicate inclusions, which show a similar impact on abrasive wear as Cr, Mo, and W. Si also increases the strength of ferrite, which results in higher cutting forces. 

Spiegel (splegelelsen) A form of pig iron containing 15-30% of manganese and 4-5% of carbon, it is added to steel in a Bessemer converter as a deoxidizing agent and to raise the manganese content of steel. 

For electrical wire and cables, the combination of conductivity and low weight is very important. In the metallurgical industry, aluminum is used as a deoxidation agent in steel manufacturing (see Chapter 8 Iron) and as an alloying element in magnesium, titanium and copper alloys.

Another need for the determination of oxygen in lead is deoxidizing treatments which are carried out e.g. for hard lead. If accurate analyses are carried out the addition of deoxidizing agents can be adjusted accurately (2).
