Deoxidized copper

Other special additions are used to deoxidize copper. Such alloys may be preferred in appHcations where embrittlement by hydrogen through reaction with internally dispersed copper oxide particles is a concern, such as in CllO. The most common deoxidized copper is C122, in which phosphoms reacts with copper oxide to form phosphoms pentoxide that can be slagged from the copper while molten.

A simple 2D simulation has been performed using COMSOL 4.2a, to model a cast cooler as shown in Figure 5. Copper with 80% of the theoretical copper thermal conductivity, i.e. k = 320 W/m K, has been used to simulated phosphorus deoxidized copper. The copper cooler shown in Figure 5 is equipped with dove-tail grooves containing refractory with a A = 1.8 W/m K. A heat flux of 1 MW/m has been applied to the hot face, by manipulating the hot face temperature (set to 1100 C). It can be seen that the sharp tips of the copper at the hot face are at incipient melting and are well above the recommended 400 maximum copper hot face temperature for continuous cooler operation without oxidation [41].

Studies on samples exposed underground have shown that tough pitch coppers, deoxidized coppers, silicon bronzes, and low-zinc brasses behave essentially alike. Soils containing cinders with high concentrations of sulfides, chlorides, or hydrogen ions corrode these materials. In this type of contaminated soil, alloys containing more than 22 % zinc experience dezincification. In soils that contain only sulfides, corrosion rates of the brasses decrease with increasing zinc content and no dezincification occurs. 

Deoxidized copper, Cu-DLP Cu-DH P, in which traces of oxygen are removed by addition of phosphorus, although the P-content is below 0.05%.
