Democratic leadership

Points out the little-recognized fact that about 50 House Democrats follow the National Rifle Association s lead and usually vote with Republicans against gun measures. The Democratic leadership often does not push hard for gun control for fear of alienating these members, who are generally Southern conservatives, or causing them to lose their seats. 

Already completed Senate action gave credence to Strauss s analysis. Anticipating a close floor fight in the House, the Senate Democratic leadership, prompted by Senator Anderson, had called Gore-Holifield for a vote because it felt the bill stood a better chance of passage in the upper chamber. In turn, success in the Senate could influence the House vote. After a brief debate, the Senate, on 12 July, voted for the bill by forty-nine to forty. ... 

The leadership theories discussed in Chapter 8 were trait, behavioral (i.e., autocratic, democratic, and laissez-fare), situational or contingency-based, transactional, and transformational. The majority of these theories are transactional in nature however, transformational leadership is used more often to implement innovation and change within the profession and achievement of organizational goals (Bass, 1985). Building on Chapter 8, other leadership theories or styles used extensively in the health care industry are servant-leadership and strengths-based leadership. 

Even during the late part of his career, where more democratic university leadership methods had been introduced and where he had stepped back to let the next generation enjoy their experiences, he was often involved in decision processes by consultation with various personnel in the department, who all respected his integrity and sound judgment in complicated matters.
