Definitions of hazard, risk and danger

The HSE leaflet Hazard and Risk Explained presents the definitions of hazard and risk in relation to tire COSHH Regulations  [Pg.192]

The hazard presented by a substance is its potential to cause harm. Hazard is associated with degrees of danger, and is quantifiable. [Pg.192]

The risk from a substance is the likelihood that it will cause harm in the actual circumstances of use. This will depend on the hazard presented by the substance how it is used how it is controlled who is exposed. .. to how much... for how long. Risk should be thought of in terms of chance-faking. What are the odds - the probability - of an accident occurring  [Pg.192]

Risk can be taken after careful consideration, or out of ignorance. The result can be fortuitous or disastrous, or anything in between. [Pg.193]

The link between hazard and ris must be tmderstood. In terms of the COSHH Regulations, poor control can create substantial risk even from a substance with low hazard. But with proper controls, the risk of being harmed by even the most hazardous substance is greatly reduced. [Pg.193]
