Defense biodefense

The Sunshine Project (http //www hammond sunshine-project.org P.O. Box 41987, Austin, Texas 78704) keeps track of biological containment labs in the United States. This group published a listing of High Containment Labs and Other Facilities of the US Biodefense Program in November of 2004 (biological containment labs 3 and 4 not known to be heavily dedicated to bio-defense are not indicated on the listing).

The science of biodefense has become a reality after the attacks on the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. It is expected that many diagnostics and vaccines against several microbes will be developed largely because of the understanding of the proteomics conducted by the U.S. Departments of Defense and of Homeland Security. 

HSPD-10—Homeland Security Directive 10, Bio-Defense for the 2P Century. HSPD-10 was issued in response to the fears of bioterrorism following the anthrax attacks of 2001, the threat of pandemic influenza, and the outbreak of severe acute respiratory syndrome. HSPD-10 serves as the basis for the country s biodefense program. This directive calls upon hospitals not only to plan for more traditional hazards, such as explosive or incendiary threats, but also to be ready to respond to bioterrorism attacks.

Publications more oriented toward the defense contractor and government threat analysis communities include Defense News, RUSI Journal, and NBC International. Applied Science and Analysis s ASA Newsletter provides a rather eclectic range of information, including on the letting of some U.S. defense contracts reviews of recent, primarily CBW, publications scientific and technical developments and historical pieces.
