This same procedure would hold true for any tool, device, or machine that receives its power from a plug. Items such as water fountains, power tools, appliances, machines, or any such device can be easily locked out by isolating the plug.. 

It is important to note that OSHA considers lockout to be a more reliable means of de-energizing equipment than tagout alone. Since safety programs that are recognized for excellence go beyond OSHA regulations, OSHA standards are minimum requirements. When an employer can exceed standards, safety performance will improve. Because OSHA may allow for a tag to be placed on the defective tool or appliance does not guarantee that if the tool is needed someone won t come along and use it. 

For this reason, a plug-lock device is the best assurance that the hand drill, power saw, electric compressor, drop light, or any number of plug-in items won t be used. 

This is one of the more common means of lockout/tagout throughout industry. As a practical matter, and to satisfy OSHA regulations, ensure that all electrical boxes are marked for function and voltage. 

In the case cited above, the smoking battery charger was numbered to correspond to the matching disconnect box. The employee was able to
