Nanowires are separated from the disk by first dissolving the tape adhesive in acetone and then dissolving the eutectic paint with concentrated nitric acid. The aluminum oxide disk is fragile and students should exercise great care when handling it. Students dissolve the aluminum oxide filter in a sodium hydroxide solution, releasing the nanowires from the template. A magnet attracts the nanowires to the bottom of the beaker while students decant the NaOH solutioa They should wash the nanowires several times with deionized water. [Pg.151]
