Brain metastases are among the most feared complications of cancer and generally carry a poor prognosis. One serious consequence of brain metastases is elevated intracranial pressure, which can rapidly lead to fatal intracranial herniation and death. Rapid identification of the signs and symptoms of brain metastases is critical to improve long-term outcome and avoid mortality. [Pg.1477]

Extravasation generally is defined as leakage of intravenous fluids into the interstitial tissue. It is one of the most feared complications of the administration of cytotoxic chemotherapy. While extravasation does not cause death, significant morbidity may result from local tissue destruction, and immediate management is necessary. [Pg.1489]

We cross ourselves, and one of the men inquires of the tonsured lad that rings the bell what it is. It is a relic of the True Cross, says the lad proudly. Within the crystal, I can see, is indeed a shard of wood, of holy cedar wood that bore Christ s body and was stained by His blood. It is the instrument of Christ s death that He graciously and godlily accepted even in His most mortal fear. And it is the instrument of our salvation. [Pg.116]

We pray so fervently to know the hour of our death all men s greatest fear is to die unshriven, no peace made with man, no mercy begged of God. [Pg.244]

When I was first taken, I thought they would make away with me privily. I feared that I would not know the hour of my death. He is staring at me. I tried to keep my soul in readiness for the... [Pg.331]

All is quiet. Sleep hovers over me. I am wearied unto death with all that mortals must know weary with fear, weary with grief, weary with talking and planning and fighting, and weary with the old wound in my thigh, and the new wound in my heart—that I have destroyed Ned. [Pg.336]

Coming to grips with death was a turning point for me. During my first year of having MCS, when my fear of death was so intense, I made peace with the idea that I might not live. It has given me more freedom to take risks when necessary, but not unreasonable risks. [Pg.51]

As a physician who spent the better part of ten years conducting medical research with chemical agents during the 60 s, I have followed closely the portrayal of nerve agents (such as VX) by government and media representatives. It seems to me that fear of death through exposure to these substances has become irrational, ignoring scientific reality. [Pg.262]

Under certain circumstances, anxiety is an appropriate emotional response. We expect a person to feel sad after a signihcant loss such as the death of a loved one, and it is eqnally reasonable for a person to feel fearful and anxious when faced with a frightening situation such as a painful or risky medical procedure. Indeed, in the context of the fight or flight reaction readily witnessed in nature when a predator is lurking near its intended prey, the physical and mental symptoms of anxiety can indeed be adaptive. This anxiety clearly serves as an appropriate alarm that potential danger is nearby and readies the individnal for a self-protective response. [Pg.128]

My fear is that if these ideas are less than true then our world is destined for a very final and ordinary death, for reason has grown too feeble to save us from the demons we have set loose. My hope is that I may bear witness to the fact that there is a great mystery... [Pg.172]
