Timothy Dalton s Bond debut in The Living Daylights (1987) offered a song by Norwegian synth-pop group a-ha The lyrics remain somewhat obscure, in the style of similar bands, and mainly repeated the idea that The hving s in the way we die. ... 

The line And I will replace you seems like a meta-textual acknowledgment of Daniel Craig s status as the sixth official James Bond. Considering how Timothy Dalton was used as a seat warmer until Pierce Brosnan became available, then Brosnan was dropped for the Casino Royale reboot, this line seems more like a warning from the studio if the movie s box-office were to fail. In retrospect, it is interesting to see how The Man From U.N.C.L.E. and the cinematic Bond series followed the same stylistic trajectories. Both began as slick spy thrillers with some humor, then evolved more toward comedy, even camp, before returning to a more serious, even grim, tone with little humor and a stronger emphasis on violence and danger. U.N.C.L.E. s first and second seasons are comparable to the Connery period, its third silly season to the Roger Moore era, and its hyper-serious fourth season to the more recent no-nonsense Bonds of Timothy Dalton and Pierce Brosnan. 

But Bond continued to seduce women, quaff Vodka Martinis, and practise his hcence to kill, however in the six years between outings, he seems to have also acquired new habits—most visibly a change in the actor portraying Bond. Exercising a clause in his contract following the protracted development of Bond 17, Timothy Dalton opted for an early retirement, and Pierce Brosnan dormed the Walther PPK in his stead. 

Perhaps the most complex onscreen Bond persona was seen during the brief tenure of Timothy Dalton in The Living Daylights and Licence to Kill. Dalton is an intense actor who actually studied the works of Fleming in preparation for the role. In fact, certain silly sequences that had originally... 

When Pierce Brosnan replaced Timothy Dalton, he brought an exuberance and sense of fun to the part that had been missing for many years, but also attempted to continue Dalton s tradition of making Bond a more nu-anced, less mechanized character. His attempts to inject humor were more successful than his predecessor s uncomfortable attempts at making quips Brosnan s Bond was a letter-perfect hybrid of his predecessor s strengths and his own personal touches. 

In The Living Daylights, we meet a new James Bond, Timothy Dalton, a 007 who didn t crank up the hearts of many critics or followers. However, I thought his rather serious (almost dour) portrayal was more in line with the character that Ian Fleming had in mind. Unfortunately, the story line was weak and MI6 must have told Q to empty the warehouse of every gimmick they had to make up for it. There were three nice touches the Aston Martin Volante Kara Milovy, the Czech cellist, played by Maryam d Abo and the campy downhill escape on the cello case. 

My first Bond was Roger Moore, and I fell in love on the spot (hey, I was young we do that kind of thing when we re young). Later, I fell head over heels for Timothy Dalton. I eventually learned to appreciate the mature beauty of Sean Connery, and I was already in love with Pierce Brosnan from his Remington Steele days (I was young, remember ).
