Table 4.2 summarizes the Lewis-like oxidation states, d count, and coordination numbers for low-spin compounds of all the normal-valent transition metals. While these represent only a subset of the empirically known species, the Lewis-like... [Pg.371]

Figure 18 Calculated energy dif f erence curve between the tetragonal and orthorhombic forms of the 2-1-4 compound as a function of d-count. Most of the plot is chemically meaningless, but it is the part around the d9 count which is of most interest. Of the transition-metal metallofullerenes, the Sc-containing systems are of particular interest as they can be synthesised in the form of mono-, di-, tri- and even tetrametallofullerenes [25]. Among the possible transition-metal encapsulates, Sc species also have the advantage that the most common valencies - trivalent and divalent - have the simple initial-state d-counts of d° and d1. Thus, evidence for population of the Sc 3d shell is already a clear sign that one has moved away from the ionic trivalent paradigm seen in all cases so far (with the notable exception of Tm C82). [Pg.217]

This could not readily be understood if the d bands were merely sampling the changing potential at the Au site. The point, of course, is that the Au d bands are actively involved in the alloying, as shown by the decrease in d count deduced from the core level and Mossbauer measurements. With dilution of the Au, the d bands become increasingly narrow and in AuSn4 the peak separation has decreased to... [Pg.115]

At low light levels the major source of noise in the CID system is a combination of Johnson noise and shot noise from the first stage of the charge amplifier. The system noise and gain of our CID camera were evaluated using the mean-variance method (10). The system noise for a single readout is 800 electrons (rms) and the gain is set for 1350 electrons per A/D count. [Pg.121]
