Summary Condensation reactions of cyclopentadienyl silanetriols (Cp Si(OH)3) with zirconium tetra-t-butoxide yield oligomeric zirconasiloxanes. Various types of polyhedral structures can be obtained by small structural modifications of the reactants or by variation of reaction parameters. These compounds can be considered as valuable model systems for zirconasilicates.

Silanetriols represent versatile building blocks for the construction of polyhedral metallasiloxanes. To transform such oligomers into supramolecular structures special efforts are directed towards the preparation of stable silanetriols bearing hydrolyzable functionalities. Stabilization of silanetriols with respect to self-condensation can be achieved by steric and electronic shielding of the Si atom. Our approach to this topic is the application of cyclopentadienyl (Cp) ligands (see Fig. 1).
