In 1968, while investigating the efficacy of bis(rj-cyclopentadienyl)-diphenyltitanium as a catalyst for the isomerization of 1,5-cyclooctadiene to 1,3-cyclooctadiene, Hagihara and co-workers found that the presence of CO inhibited the isomerization. Under the reaction conditions imposed, Cp2Ti(CO)2 (1) and benzophenone were isolated. Furthermore, 1 showed poor catalytic activity for this isomerization (34).

These compounds have been obtained indirectly by reactions of silylated acetylenes with metal carbonyls or olefin complexes. Thus, trimethylsilylphenylacetylene reacts with rj5-cyclopentadienylcobalt dicarbonyl, cobaltocene, or rjs-cyclopentadienyl-(l,3-cyclooctadiene) cobalt, in refluxing xylene, to give a mixture of cis- and trans-bis-(trimethylsilyl)cyclobutadiene complexes (R = Me, R = Ph) 68, 127, 137) ... 

Many organometallic complexes use cod as a ligand because it can be easily substituted. For that reason, many cobalt cyclooctadiene complexes are important in catalytic reactions, particularly when used with cyclopentadienyl in complexes (Section 5.1.2). ... 

The bridging chloride ligands in these [Ir(olefin)2Cl]2 compounds are susceptible to metathesis reactions, yielding new dimeric compounds of the form [Ir(olefin)2B]2 where B represents a new bridging ligand. AUcoxides, thiolates, and carboxylates have all been employed successfully in the replacement of chloride. The complexes with B = Br, I have also been prepared, both by metathesis reactions and by direct reaction of cyclooctene or cyclooctadiene with IrBrs or Iris The olefin complexes also provide excellent starting materials for the syntheses of arene and cyclopentadienyl iridium complexes, a subject that will be discussed in the next section.
