In the presence of magnesium bromide, cyclobutenecarbonitrile reacted with 1-morpholino-cy-cloalkenes to give exclusively the cycloadducts 23. Rather surprisingly, only cyclobutyl ketones 24 were obtained when cyclobutenecarbonitrile or methyl cyclobutenecarboxylate was reacted with other enamines under similar conditions.30... 

The dihydropyran 186 is produced from l-dimethylamino-2-methylpropene and methyl vinyl ketone by way of the iminium enolate zwitterion 185 the dihydropyran is in equilibrium with the cyclobutyl ketone 187 (equation 79)100. 

Among these ketones the thermal decomposition of methyl cyclobutyl ketone, cyclobutanone and cyclopentanone will be dealt with. In principle, they may decompose unimolecularly like the cycloalkanes or may split into free radicals as do the simple alkyl ketones. 

The simple stoichiometry, the first-order kinetics as well as the absence of inhibition all indicate that the decompositions of methyl cyclobutyl ketone and cyclo-butanone proceed according to a simple unimolecular mechanism. However, the experimental results do not rule out the intermediateformation of biradicals. The presence of trace amounts of cyclopropane, detected among the decomposition products of cyclobutanone, could be considered as evidence for this, although, due to analytical difficulties, the presence of cyclopropane cannot be regarded as unequivocally established.
