Cyanuric chloride/dimethylformamide

Cyanuric chloride reacts vigorously and exothermically with DMF after a deceptively long induction period. The 1 1 adduct initially formed decomposes above 60° C with evolution of carbon dioxide and formation of a dimeric unsaturated quaternary ammonium salt. Dimethylformamide is appreciably basic and is not a suitable solvent for acyl halides. 

A variety of oximes 255 undergo the Beckmann rearrangement upon treatment with 2,4,6-trichloro-l,3,5-triazine (cyanuric chloride, 256) in A,A-dimethylformamide (DMF, 257) at room temperature in excellent yields (equation 77). 

Amines. The amines used to sequentially substitute the chlorines of cyanuric chloride free or immobilized onto agarose vary from case to case. In general, the amines should be dissolved in an appropriate buffer, either an aqueous solution or an organic solvent such as dimethylformamide. We found that cyanuric chloride reacts easily but in a controllable manner with dimethylformamide and C02 being evolved. The reaction was fully elucidated later by H. Gold (1960).
