In 1776, Scheele first prepared cyanuric acid by pyrolysis of uric acid (7) . In 1830, the first correct analysis was obtained by Liebig and Wohler (1835MI22000), but the molecular formula was incorrectly assigned as C6H6N606. Dreschel deduced the correct molecular formula, C3H3N3O3, in 1875 (l875JPR(l 1)289). Cyanuric add does not have many industrial applications itself, but many of its derivatives are valuable monomers (see Section 2.20.5). 

The thiocyanurates are readily hydrolyzed in acid to cyanuric add and a thiol. Trimethyl trithiocyanurate reacts with sodium sulfide to give the trisodium salts. Melamine is formed on treatment of the thiocyanurates with aqueous ammonia at high temperatures the alkylthio groups are replaced sequentially <59HC(13)l,p.ll-l), and can be removed using Raney nickel (equation 25) (B-61MI22000,p.64l).

By passing the vapour of cyanic add into alcohol, Liebig and Wdhler (1830) obtained what they called cyanic ether (ethyl cyanate), but fifteen years later they found that the crystalline product contains ndther cyanic add nor cyanuric add, and named it allophanic ether, because it is different from what was expected (oAAor, other manifest).
