Cylindrical cutters

The skiving wheel is similar to shaper cutters. It can be either conical or cylindrical. Using conical cutters, the clearance angle is already realized in the tool. These processes are designed in a way that the cross axis point lies on the plane of the cutter face. Using cylindrical cutters.

This cutter has teeth on the periphery only, and is used to produce flat surfaces parallel to the axis of the cutter. Fig. 11.8(a). The teeth are helical, enabling each tooth to take a cut gradually, reducing shock and minimising chatter. Cylindrical cutters are made in a variety of diameters and lengths up to 160 mm diameter x 160 mm long.

Strand chopper n. (1, pelletizer) A type of cutter into which multiple extruded and chilled strands are fed for cutting into short lengths about equal to the strand diameter. The strands are fed perpendicular to the edge of a thick stationary knife and are sheared off by several rotating knives bolted to a massive cylindrical head. No planing machine may be used for cutting any rebate, recess, tenon or mould unless the cutter is effectively guarded and any machine for surfacing which is not mechanically fed shall be fitted with a cylindrical cutter block. 

A further bridge guard should be attached to the fence on the non-working side to cover the cutter block as the fence is moved across the table. Machines should be fitted with a braking device to bring the cutter block to rest within 10 seconds. Only cylindrical (or round form ) cutter blocks should be used with maximum cutter projection of 1.1 mm. Keep gaps between the two sides of the table as small as possible.
