Curriculum planning

In discussing physical chemistry curriculum revision we voiced many of the same concerns that are detailed in the New Traditions Physical Chemistry Curriculum Planning Session Report (7). Our new curriculum attempts to address specifically the concerns regarding math preparation, course content, active learning, writing skills, and appropriate utilization of the laboratory course to enhance learning.

There are certain basic principles of curriculum planning which should form the basis for the formation of a good curriculum. 

There are a number of approaches to curriculum planning in chemistry. The extremes of such approaches are given in Table... 

Actually no single way of curriculum planning exclusively based on one approach can fulfil the curricular needs of pupils. It is always better to combine different approaches to plan an effective curriculum in science.

An explicit curriculum plan that is adopted and owned by the entire faculty. An example of such a plan is described in Fig. 4.1. 

Underlying structure of the curriculum. Virtually all universities have an underlying structure that dictates the length of the university school year, the length and intensity of the terms or semesters, and the atomic unit of instruction, which is referred to as a course in this book. Established academic units and total number of allowable units can limit the flexibility of a curriculum plan.

Once the curriculum plans and the teaching programmes are agreed by the Authority, the provision of resources and facilities can commence. The Authority purchases and distributes to every school the "core" resources to establish a viable technological curriculum. The exact specification of the final package, however, will depend upon the individual school s interests and expeitise. Existing provision is also taken into account.
