These bikes could be a wonderful transportation option, combining the efficiency, quiet and nonpollution of a bicycle with the ease of riding a small motorcycle. For these reasons, electric-assist bikes sell at the rate of over 200,000 per year in Japan. But in the United States, these bikes run up against a cultural barrier. Bicycle enthusiasts, who are less likely to object to their four-figure price tags, do not want a motor and do not want a bike that weighs 60 pounds. Others do not want to be seen riding to work. So U.S. sales have been poor.

Language and culture barriers, as well as awareness and interpretation of Chinese laws continue to be deterrents for some companies to source aggressively from China. Having a local partner or establishing an office in China will certainly help to alleviate this problem.

Another cultural barrier to using the lessons offered by HROs is the hierarchical nature of medical practice. The hierarchy that exists between patients and physicians places the doctor in the position of expert and the patient in the position of a passive, subordinate recipient of services. The hierarchy is replicated between the various health professions—doctor to nurse, nurse to nursing assistant, pharmacist to pharmacy technician.
