Crystallization disaccharide stability

A detailed three-dimensional structural X-ray analysis has indicated a regular three-fold extended helical conformation for chondroitin 4-sulphate. The polyanion conformation is stabilized by an intramolecular hydrogen bond across each (1 - 4)-/S-D-linkage and two intermolecular hydro n bonds per disaccharide repeat unit. The two Na+ in the crystal asymmetric unit are each assumed to be fully hydrated. Probable differences between the corresponding helical forms of chondroitin 6-sulphate and dermatan sulphate were discussed. Three idealistic models for the organization of chondroitin 4-sulphate molecules have been considered. ... [Pg.321]
