Critical Parameters of Multidimensional HPLC

It cannot be denied that several critical parameters have to be considered in order to benefit from multidimensional separations. 

A fundamental premise is that there are robust methods in the individual dimensions. For the column switching, manifold valves with fast circuit times and a low void volume are essential. During the time of column switch the flow is completely interrupted for a moment, leading to pressure fluctuations. Therefore, steel or PEEK capillaries with a large wall thickness and especially tightened fittings are necessary. 

The chromatography data system must be capable of controlling internal as well as external switching valves at certain times by means of electrical impulses. Much attention needs to be paid to the correct plumbing of the switching valve
