Crimp side length

Bicomponent fibers have also provided a route to self-texturing (self-crimping) fibers. The crimp results from the length differential developed during processing caused by differential shrinkage in the two polymers in side-by-side or eccentric core—sheath configurations (50). 

US Military stab primers consist of a cylindrical metallic cup varying in size from 0.16-inch diam by 0.100-inch length (Navy Primer MklQ2) to 0.241-inch diam by 0.340-inch length (Army Primer M45). The sensitive end of Navy stab primers is closed by a very thin metal cover disk crimped into place. The closure of the opposite side may be of the same type (in this case the metal is turned over and the disk placed prior to loading), or the cup may have a closed end... 

The individual cells have two tab finger lines on each side ofthe cell, so four tab ribbons had to be cut for each cell. The tab ribbon runs the total length of the cell, so the length for each tab would have to be 5", plus an extra M" for space between the cell and the bus ribbon connect, plus the width of the bus ribbon that the tab is connecting on to. So, I needed to cut 160 pieces of 5 /16" long tab ribbon for the 40 cells that would be in the two panels. Crimping the tabs... 

The side-side configuration is usually used to impart crimp to the fiber. If formed from fiber materials with differing shrinkage characteristics, and treated after fiber formation to develop the shrinkage, the differential lengths will cause the fibers to contract into a helical shape and develop three-dimensional crimp. Such self-crimping fibers provide a different type of bulk and hand than do conventionally crimped fibers.
