Create Concepts

Using the list of specihcations, we look for ways to make a good product. We create concepts brief descriptions of the working principle or form of the product. These are usually in the form of a sketch, of a written description, or of a model.

To get an idea of the size of the problem we will look at the transport of oil. The amount of oil used worldwide is enormous of the order of 100 tons per second The greater part of this is found in the Middle East and has to be transported to the industrial centres of our world, to the United States, Europe and Eastern Asia. The oil has to be transported over distances of around 10 000 km, so a typical round trip is 20 000 km. 

A tanker uses about 1% of its content as fuel on a round trip. This is a major part of the cost. The propulsion system has an efficiency of perhaps 40%. The propulsion has to overcome the drag forces on the ship.

We will consider creating concepts using hve steps (Figure 7-7) ... 

Actually this looking back happens during the whole process creating concepts is an iterative process. It can be a lot messier than the diagram suggests. The team ends with a large list of concepts. 

Creating concepts begins with the list of customer needs and the first target specifications. The team generates a great number of ideas, from which 2-8 will be considered somewhat seriously. The method used here has six steps ... 

Creating concepts is seldom a linear process - it usually requires several iterations.
