Until recently, the synthesis of ionic/covalent nitrides was relatively unexplored except for the pioneering work of Juza on ternary lithium nitrides.11 However, within the last decade, several groups have begun to explore ternary nitride systems, many of which have relied on the inductive effect. The inductive effect is based on the donation of electron density from an electropositive element to an adjacent metal-nitrogen bond, thereby increasing the covalency and stability of that bond and of the nitride material itself. The success of this method is illustrated by the fact that almost all of the known ionic/covalent ternary nitrides contain electropositive elements. Only recently has a small number of transition metal ternary nitrides been synthesized in the absence of the inductive effect at moderate temperatures, by taking advantage of low temperature techniques, such as the ammonolysis of oxide precursors and metathesis reactions.6,12-17... [Pg.369]

The main idea of these techniques lies in the interaction of the active hydrogen atom of the alcohols with the anions of metal hydrides, alkyls, acetylides, nitrides, amides, dialkylamides, bis(trialkylsilyl)amides, sulfides, etc., with formation of compounds where an H atom is bonded by a strong covalent bond (usually gaseous HX). Alkaline hydrides of the most active metals (K, Rb, Cs) are used to slow down the reaction of metal with alcohol sometimes it is necessary simply to avoid explosion. [Pg.19]

These, therefore, constitute the guidelines for finding superconductors or how to raise the superconducting temperature. Since Covalon conduction is a nucleus to superconductivity and covalent bond is a poor conductor at room temperature, a good conductor at room temperature implies a poor covalent bond and therefore will not be a superconductor or will be a poor superconductor at best at low temperature. As for hydrides, borides, and carbides, different types of nitrides are possible depending on the type of metallic element. The classifications of nitrides are similarly referred to as ionic (salt-like), covalent, and interstitial. However, it should be noted that there is a transition of bond types. Within the covalent classification, nitrides are known that have a diamond or graphite structure. Principally, these are the boron nitrides that were discussed in Chapter 8. [Pg.278]
