Cosmology and life

The interconnections between cosmology and life uniform scalar field, , is taken to evolve according to... [Pg.119]

The origin of life and its evolution into the life-forms we know today remains a contentious issue. This controversy arises mainly because there is a lack of hard scientific data, from fossils or other sources, on how primitive cells develop (microbial evolution being about as far back as we can go). Cosmology and geochemical data suggest that the Earth was formed as a condensation product from gas and dust particles from an immense supernova in outer space some (4.5-4.7) X 10 years ago. [Pg.7]

Denote by A(Af) the estimated cosmic metal abundance given the observation of life on earth, where "metal" conventionally denotes carbon and all heavier elements. Suppose cosmology and astrophysics offer some set / of inputs to tractable calculations for generating A(Af), which includes primordial nuclear abundances, but also models of star and planetaiy-system formation. For simplicity, we first treat / and N as independent, as they effectively were for Hoyle, but later come back and revise this assumption to represent more recent cosmological anthropic arguments. [Pg.412]

If the world reached equilibrium it would be a sterile and ungracious place winds and rivers would become quiescent, fires burnt out, and life extinct. All the events which give vitality and movement to the scene are transitions towards equilibrium from the condition of violent unbalance in which the universe was found at the beginning of the present cosmological era—whenever and whatever that incomprehensible point of departure was. [Pg.353]

This may be the first demonstration that a natural L-enan-tiomer enrichment occurs in certain cosmological environments. Could these observations be relevant to the emergence of L-enan-tiomers as the dominant amino acids on the earth And, if so, could there be life elsewhere in the universe that is based upon the same amino acid handedness ... [Pg.98]
