Nucleophilic substitution reactions are among the most widely studied reactions in chemistry (1). This is due, in part, to their synthetic utility, to the wide range of substrates and reactants, and to their relatively clean kinetic behavior. In contrast to thermodynamically based studies of structure and reactivity (e.g., Hammett correlations of acidity), a satisfactory understanding of kinetic reactivity in S 2 reactions has yet to be achieved, albeit not for lack of talent or effort expended. [Pg.87]

The scope of the present study is to investigate the time extension of the conventional and the advanced CPS deactivation methods. The results show quite good correlation of "acid" absorbance with residual tensile strength (fig 3). This type of relationship is potentially useful for examination of components in the field, since only a small sample is required and the structural integrity of the unit is not compromised. An explanation for the correlation of acidity with 7 3c h is that both are related to the hybridization of the carbon orbital used for C-H bonding. Because s orbitals are lower in energy than p orbitals, a hybrid orbital with more s character will be lower in energy and thus have electron density closer to the nucleus than will a hybrid with less s character. This lower energy orbital will be more electronegative and will be better able to stabilize a negative charge when a proton is removed in an acid-base reaction. [Pg.41]

The thermodynamic and analytical aspects of acid-base reactions in aprotic solvents are surveyed in reviews by Davis [1, 2]. The correlation of acid-base strength in water and aprotic solvents is of major importance. Early kinetic work by Bell and co-workers on the acid catalysis of (i) the ethyldiazoacetate-phenol interaction [3] (ii) the rearrangement of N-bromoacetanilide [4] and (iii) the inversion of /-menthone [5] established an order of acid strengths in aprotic media and the importance of intra-molecular hydrogen bonds e.g in picric acid). A thermodynamic method using reference acids and bases is more direct, and Bell and Bayles [6] employed the indicator acid Bromophenol Blue to obtain a basicity order for weak amine bases. Kinetic measurements on these systems have recently been made, and are considered in detail in Section 7. [Pg.122]
