Constructive action philosophy

The first two steps laid the foundation for understanding the rudiments of nonviolence. Now I want to dwell on two significant aspects of the philosophy which, I believe, would be more relevant and meaningful for professionals and those who deal with the production of material wealth and goods. These two concepts from Mahatma Gandhi s philosophy of nonviolence are referred to as trusteeship and constructive action. [Pg.392]

An alternative philosophy is to construct a classical trajectory which is not a solution of an initial value problem. Such constrained trajectories would no longer obey Hamilton s equations, but would extremize the classical action subject to certain dynamical constraints (50-52). [Pg.604]

Physical scientists are not much given to philosophy. They tend to be down-to-earth people, prepared to believe what their senses tell them, and not very concerned about the wider philosophical implications. This reluctance is very clearly seen in the study of heterogeneous catalysis, where the construction of models and the drawing of inferences are exceptionally difficult but vitally important the great variation in the vigour with which these actions are pursued reflects the uncertainty that scientists feel on departing from tangible observations. [Pg.526]

Dam safety is the art and science of ensuring the integrity and viability of dams such that they do not present unacceptable risks to the public, property, and the environment. It requires the collective application of engineering principles and experience, and a philosophy of risk management that recognizes that a dam is a structure whose safe function is not explicitly determined by its original design and construction. It also includes all actions taken to identify or predict deficiencies and consequences related to failure, and to document, publicize, and reduce, eliminate, or remediate to the extent reasonably possible, any unacceptable risks. [Pg.78]
