Constructing Polymers Using the LEGO Principles

In this section I will limit myself to the LEGO principles for construction of polymers from their building blocks. To make matters clear, let me state at the outset that our principle is a reverse construction of a giant molecule, with an aim of conceptualizing it. We are not describing the actual chemical mechanisms whereby these molecules are made, although the resemblance is there. [Pg.165]

SCHEME 6.9 Archetypal principles for constructing polymers Illustration of the condensation method (here clack-click) using the formation of polysiloxane (or silicone). X and Y can be any single connector chemical groups. [Pg.166]

FIGURE 6.4 Three polymers formed by condensation (these can be constructed using the clack-click approach) (a) Dialkylsilicone. (b) Polyester, (c) Nylon. The latter two are copolymers including two different monomers. [Pg.170]
