3 CONSIDERATION OF STRESSES THAT DEVELOPED ON A CONCRETE SLAB 

The stresses that developed on the concrete slab of a rigid pavement result from various sources, the major ones being the traffic load (axial loads), the temperature changes, the slab s moisture changes and the frictions developed on the interface with the underlying layer. 

The abovementioned factors cause tensile, compressive or flexural stress. A detailed analysis of all the stresses that developed on a concrete slab is beyond the scope of this book. However, in the present section, some general information will be provided regarding the way these stresses are developed and how they are handled.
