Tracers conservative

The easiest technique fiar establishing the nonconservative behavior of an element, or one of its chemical species, is to compare its concentration to that of a conservative tracer. Salinity is typically used because it is a standard measurement performed on most seawater samples. [Pg.102]

In the Pacific Ocean, most of the waters at 2500 m have a prefiormed phosphate concentration intermediate between NADW and AABW. Because preformed phosphate is a conservative tracer, it can be used to estimate the proportions of NADW and AABW present in the deep zones of the ocean basins. The average deep-water preformed phosphate concentration is 1.4 (jlM. This concentration would result from an equal-volume admixture of NADW and AABW. This conservative mixing estimate is based on the assumption that the preformed phosphate concentrations of the end-member water masses have remained constant over time scales at least as long as the mixing time of the ocean. [Pg.253]

When we talk about tracers, we generally mean conservative tracers with no sources or sinks. This is opposed to gas tracers, with gas transfer to the atmosphere, and reactive tracers, with a reaction occurring. Tracer studies typically use a conservative tracer, input to the system in a highly unsteady manner, such as a pulse or a front. The pulse and front are typically a more stringent test of the model than a steady-state process with any variety of reactions. Thus, a model that properly simulates the output concentration curve of a pulse or front is assumed to be sufficient for most real conditions with reactions. [Pg.132]

In Example 6.6, we saw that there is little difference between a plug flow reactor and 10 or more reactors-in-series when the constituent is undergoing a first-order reaction under steady-state conditions. This is not true for all circumstances. One example would be a conservative tracer under unsteady boundary conditions, as discussed in this section. [Pg.135]

For a conservative tracer with an unsteady input, a plug flow reactor simply acts as a time lag, where the input comes out of the reactor later, precisely as it went in. The examples of a pulse input and a front input at time t = 0 are given in Figure 6.7. The only difference between the inflow and the outflow are the times at which the... [Pg.135]

Rivers are generally considered as a plug flow reactor with dispersion. Determination of the dispersion coefficient for rivers was covered in Chapter 6, and determination of the gas transfer coefficient is a slight addition to that process. We will be measuring the concentration of two tracers a volatile tracer that is generally a gas (termed a gas tracer, C) and a conservative tracer of concentration (Cc). The transported quantity... [Pg.238]

Under given conditions, colloids do not have an impact on the migration of Sr(II), U(VI) and Np(V), which display only weak or no interaction with the colloids. While Sr(II) migrates as a weak sorbing tracer, the oxidized actinides U(VI) and Np(V) are partly eluted together with the conservative tracer, that is, without retardation. A second part of U(VI) and Np(V) appears slightly retarded probably due to the weak reversible interaction with surfaces of the fracture infill. [Pg.540]
