Connector telescopic

Fiber optic data cable will stretch from the shore for 30 km to a connector box some 4800 meters below the ocean surface. Strings of nine separate cables will rise vertically about 280 meters above the ocean floor. Each cable, held up by a float, will contain 24 detectors. The apparatus, referred to as a neutrino telescope, will have to pick up at least ten muon events per year from any given 1° patch of sky for the DUMAND scientists to be confident that they have a significant neutrino source, not just a few background pulses from non-ncutrino cosmic rays,... 

Due to their high specific strength and stiffness, long-fibre reinforced aluminium matrix composites are attractive in aerospace apphcations. The high-gain antenna boom of the Hubble Space Telescope, for example, is made from a carbon-fibre reinforced aluminium matrix composite [114]. Aluminium oxide reinforced aluminium matrix composites are also suitable for push rods in motorcycle engines and for electrically conductive and mechanically loaded connectors on power poles [1]. 

The telescopic connector used between the bushings and the other components of the manifold enables thermal expansion to be compensated. 

The telescopic connector is rendered leakproof by a fit with a very small clearance (0.005 mm, lapped aperture) and by differentiation of thermal expansion. The bushings are heated by band heaters, whereas the connectors are heated by cartridge heaters. The basic nozzle in this system is one with a heated torpedo. The nozzle cartridge heater may easily be replaced through a hole in the mould clamping plate.
