Congested Districts

The Well of the Saints produced at the Abbey Theatre commissioned (with artist Jack B. Yeats) by the Manchester Guardian to write a series of twelve articles on the congested districts of the west of Ireland.

The inspectors had been invited to attend a postmortem examination of the adult man. His kidneys were "excessively enlarged," about fifty percent larger than normal. "Clotted, purplish congestion" appeared "on [the] periphery of [the] kidneys." Samples of Elixir Sulfanilamide collected by the inspectors were sent to Central District headquarters in Chicago (33). 

While heavy work was under way in the congested eastern section of the mine the old mushroom beds in what was to become Nos. 10 and 11 Districts were also being cleared. This was a self-contained area of about fourteen acres, enclosed by dry stone walls, in which the floors had been made level and which still retained the light railway system installed by the Agaric Company ten years earlier.
