Conformational Nomenclature

This is a complicated subject that is usually covered in more or less detail in textbooks on organic chemistry. For purposes of this book it is only necessary to know which names go with which stractures. Just why it works like that can be found in textbooks if one is interested. A few points not usually found in textbooks will be mentioned here. 

With only rare exceptions, hexapyranose molecules that could exist in boat conformations do not. They are found in chair conformations. Additionally, they normally are found in what is called the Cj conformation, as opposed to the C4 conformation. As an example, a-D-glucose is shown (Structure 1)

The rules for conformation nomenclature in cyclic monosaccharides have been summarized by Schwarz, J. C. P. /. Chem. Soc. Chem. Commun. 1973, 505. 

When applying this conformational nomenclature, it is essential to identify the substituents on the two carbon atoms that determine the conformational designation.

See Appendix under Carbohydrate Conformational Nomenclature for conformational definitions. The Ci conformation is the usual one as is found for both diastereomers of D-glucose (shown) where the terminal —CH2OH group is equatorial.

The lUBMB Commission on Nomenclature has issued a number of recommendations dealing with areas of a more biochemical nature (72), such as peptide hormones (86), conformation of polypeptide chains (87), abbreviations for nucleic acids and polynucleotides (88), iron—sulfur proteins (89), enzyme units (90), etc. The Commission has also produced rules and recommendations for naming enzymes (91,92). 

In 1774, Scheele deterrnined that barium oxide was a distinct oxide or "earth," and named it terra ponderosa because of its high density (1). Later, this name was changed to barote from the Greek word meaning heavy. Later stUl, the name of the oxide was modified to baryta to conform to the nomenclature recommended by Lavoisier, and from this the name barium was derived...

Part I contains entries referring to the conventional names of compounds as they appear in the preparations of this volume followed by the systematic names in brackets, if the nomenclature differs The bracketed names conform to the systematic nomenclature adopted by the Chemical Abstracts Service starting with Chemical Abstracts Volume 76 (1972) Part II of the index contains entries of the subjects of this volume with compound names in a reversed order of Part I... 

The above nomenclature conforms with the recommendations of BS1339fl although there are some ambiguities in the standard.
