Concept amalgamation

Hendry s discussion traces the evolution of the bond concept since the nineteenth century, providing an account of its explanatory role in chemistry, a role to which any philosophical account of the bond must do justice. This historicity seems to resonate with Andrea Woody s notion of concept amalgamation, introduced in Chapter 5.3, Concept Amalgamation and Representation in Quantum Chemistry , to describe the creative melding of classical and quantum notions that resulted from the incorporation of quantum mechanics into twentieth-century chemistry. The question arises whether chemistry as a science is especially well suited to develop and embrace conceptual amalgams of the specific sort she describes. [Pg.10]

At a first glance the above mentioned electron transfer would require the application of the Zintl concept (designated in a later version as the Zintl-Klemm-Busmann concept [10]) as a tool for understanding the structural properties of alkali and alkaline earth amalgams. In simple words the Zintl concept says that the... [Pg.170]

The formation of dimers by reduction of a,p-unsaturated ketones in aqueous media is well documented in the early literature of electrochemistry. Reductants include sodium or aluminium amalgams [58], dissolving zinc and a lead cathode in both acid and alkaline conditions [59,60]. Mixtures of dimers and dihydro derivatives were isolated. As the concept of the hydrodimerization of activated alkenes... [Pg.64]

Ammonium amalgam was first reported in 1805 by Seebeck, who electrolyzed ammonium carbonate solution at mercury cathode. A concise review of the concepts on the structure of ammonium amalgam is given, for example, in Ref. 200. [Pg.984]

An amalgamation of these definitions may provide the best explanation of the concept of quality in health care. Each provides additional insight into quality, what we can expect from quality, and how quality can be perceived. Webster s definition supports the idea that quality is a continuum of excellence or the lack thereof. From the Office of Technology Assessment definition it can be said that in medical care, quality can be measured and used to evaluate the care delivered by health care providers. This definition also implies that the care offered to patients should increase the probability of positive outcomes (e.g., getting rid of an infection) and decrease negative outcomes of care (e.g.,... [Pg.98]
