Concentration effects, in silica gel formation

The influence of the cations and anions has been discussed separately with the solution properties and reactions in the main focus. It has, however, been known over 100 years that anions play a crucial role for the stabilization and coagulation of colloids. More recently, the contribution of anions on the stabilization of particles, biocolloids, and bubbles has received renewed attention. - In these papers, it has been pointed out that there exists a collaborative interaction between cations and anions upon adsorption of one of the complexes from solution. At high concentrations this effect renders the simple indifferent ions specific and selective to each other. It is also seen as a dependency on the acid-base pair chosen for the regulation of the pH. This effect certainly needs to be added as an extension to (correction of) the DLVO theory. However, as shown in this paper, it is just as probable that the anion and cation collaborate during the adsorption and formation of gels and precipitates at the surface. The presence of such mixed phases has been confirmed experimentally, e.g., during the formation of hydroxoapatite in silica gel layers. ... [Pg.498]

The mechanism of the inhibitive action of LiOH proposed by Stark et al. [7] is attributed to the formation of lithium silicate that dissolves at the surface of the aggregate without causing swelling [7], In the presence of KOH and NaOH the gel product incorporates Li ions and the amount of Li in this gel increases with its concentration. The threshold level of Na Li is 1 0.67 to 1 1 molar ratio at which expansion due to alkali-silica reaction is reduced to safe levels. Some workers [22] have found that when LiOH is added to mortar much more lithium is taken up by the cement hydration products than Na or K. This would indicate that small amounts of lithium are not very effective. It can therefore be concluded that a critical amount of lithium is needed to overcome the combined concentrations of KOH and NaOH to eliminate the expansive effect and that the product formed with Li is non-expansive. [Pg.314]

Bruk et al. studied [712] the radiation polymerization of TFE adsorbed on highly porous substrates. It has been shown that the rate of radiation polymerization of TFE on silica is controlled by the concentration of monomer in the adsorbed layer.
