Thus the Bethe sum rule is fulfilled exactly in the RPA at all values of the momentum transferred, provided that a complete basis set is used. Therefore, as in the case of the TRK sum rule when optical transition properties (q = 0) are considered, we expect that the BSR sum rule will be useful in evaluating basis set completeness when generalized oscillator strength distributions are calculated, for example for use in calculating stopping cross sections. It should be noted [12] that the completeness of the computational basis set is dependent on q, and thus care needs be taken to evaluate the BSR at various values of q. [Pg.181]

A modification of G2 by Pople and co-workers was deemed sufficiently comprehensive tliat it is known simply as G3, and its steps are also outlined in Table 7.6. The representation of trial fiinctions as linear combinations of fixed basis fiinctions is perhaps the most connnon approach used in variational calculations optimization of the coefficients is often said to be an application of tire linear variational principle. Altliough some very accurate work on small atoms (notably helium and lithium) has been based on complicated trial functions with several nonlinear parameters, attempts to extend tliese calculations to larger atoms and molecules quickly runs into fonnidable difficulties (not the least of which is how to choose the fomi of the trial fiinction). The LMTO method [58, 79] can be considered to be the linear version of the KKR teclmique. According to official LMTO historians, the method has now reached its third generation [79] the first starting with Andersen in 1975 [58], the second connnonly known as TB-LMTO. In the LMTO approach, the wavefimction is expanded in a basis of so-called muffin-tin orbitals. These orbitals are adapted to the potential by constmcting them from solutions of the radial Scln-ddinger equation so as to fomi a minimal basis set. Interstitial properties are represented by Hankel fiinctions, which means that, in contrast to the LAPW teclmique, the orbitals are localized in real space. The small basis set makes the method fast computationally, yet at the same time it restricts the accuracy. The localization of the basis fiinctions diminishes the quality of the description of the wavefimction in die interstitial region. [Pg.2213]

Iterative approaches, including time-dependent methods, are especially successfiil for very large-scale calculations because they generally involve the action of a very localized operator (the Hamiltonian) on a fiinction defined on a grid. The various basis sets used in a calculation of the H and S integrals for a system are attempts to obtain a basis set that is as close as possible to a complete set but to stay within practical limits set by the speed and memory of contemporary computers. One immediately notices that the enterprise is directly dependent on the capabilities of available computers, which have become more powerful over the past several decades. The size and complexity of basis sets in common use have increased accordingly. Whatever basis set we choose, however, we are attempting to strike a balance. If the basis set is too small, it is inaeeurate if it is too large, it exceeds the capabilities of our computer.
