This deaease in compressibility with inaease in pressure explains the overlarge deaease in volume (44%) due to electrostriction calculated earlier, assuming fi to be independent of pressure. It also supports Passynski s approximation Off)hyd sheii = 

If one compares this with the Conway relation of local pressure to field, one sees that this field is equivalent in electrostiictional pressure to about 4 x 10 Pa, at which (see above) the compressibility is about 22% of the value at the standard pressure. 

the compression in the first layer of water molecules around an Na ion would be about (1.71/18) or 10% of the average volume of water in the bulk.
