Components of a Cellular Automata Model

A set of equivalent cells arranged in a regular lattice and a set of states that characterize the cells. 

Transition rules that define how the state of the cell in the next cycle is to be determined from the state of the cell and the states of its neighbors in the current cycle. 

A function that defines the neighborhood around each cell. A cell can interact only with other cells that are within its neighborhood. 

We shall consider each of these components in turn.
