Commercial Comics

The civil defense comics that received, perhaps, the largest distribution were If an A-bomb Falls (1951) and The H-bomb and You (1954). Jonson collaborated on Eastward Ho , which insulted the Scots and the king, and placed the authors behind bars. In 1606, Volpone put its author at the top on London s comic stage. In 1610, The Alchemist appeared, and in 1614, the attack on London Puritans, Bartholomew Fair. These plays cemented Jonson s reputation as the great poet of English comedy. He received subsidies from the Crown for his work and continued to write court masques until a quarrel with Jones returned him to full-time work in the commercial theater. 

The main technical drawback of canned speech is that it can only say a fixed number of things. This can be a severe drawback in even simple applications where for example a telephone number is to be read in an answer machine application. A common solution is to attempt to sphce together recordings of individual words or phrases so as to create new utterances. The result of such operations varies greatly from acceptable (but clearly spliced) to comically awfiil. That said, even the resultant poor naturalness of this is often chosen over TTS in commercial situations.
