Comma with coordinating conjunctions

Connect the clauses with a comma and a coordinating conjunction and, or, nor, for, but, so, or yet). Make sure the coordinating conjunction expresses the right relationship between the two ideas. We are here, but you are not. [Pg.35]

When you have two closely related ideas and want to stress them equally, coordinate them. In coordination, you join two sentences with a coordinating conjunction. To remember the coordinating conjunctions ( for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so ), think of the acronym FANBOYS then always join two sentences with a comma and one of the FANBOYS. A comma splice occurs when two sentences are linked with a comma. To correct this error, you can (1) separate the two sentences with a period, (2) separate the two sentences with a semicolon, (3) insert a coordinating conjunction ( for, but, and, or, nor, so, yet ) after the comma, or (4) subordinate one clause. [Pg.494]

Do not join two sentences with a comma only such an error is called a comma splice. Use a comma plus one of the coordinating conjunctions listed previously, a period, a semicolon, or subordination. [Pg.501]
