Column Channeling

There are five basic types of killers of column efficiency 1) effects that remove the bonded phase 2) effects that dissolve the column surface, or the packing itself 3) materials that bind to the column 4) things that cause pressure increases and 5) column channeling. There are definite symptoms of each of these and either treatments or preventions for each type of killer (Fig. 6.2). [Pg.73]

In packed bubble columns the gas-liquid interfacial area also can be related to the external catalyst surface area, as in trickle flow reactors. However, in packed bubble columns channeling can occur with strongly reduced gas-liquid interfacial areas [11]. [Pg.69]

A hydrophilic cross-linked gel (mostly polyacrylamide or polysaccharide gel), which is soaked with a solution of electrolytes, or a viscous solution of a linear polymer with an electrolyte, can also serve as the separation medium. Electrophoresis using such gels or polymeric media is called gel electrophoresis. The polymeric chains of the gel serve in most cases not only as a supporting medium but also influence to a great extent the movement of the separated species. The gels or solutions of linear polymers can also be filled into columns (channels), but as the structure... [Pg.943]

This changed at about 5.95 s, when the strain in the east column (Channel 6) increased suddenly to 0.0065 mm/mm, and it continued to be larger than the east bounding-column of the south wall (Channel 4 + 5), in most of the cases, and remained in tension for the rest of the experiment. This was associated with the sudden failure of the lap-splice of this coluirm and the formation of a crack which increased the recorded displacement resulting in a permanent strain of 0.00055 mm/ mm or a displacement of 1.51 mm, which is noticeable in Fig. 17.14. Therefore, although the graph shows an increase in the strain of the outer column, this is not true since it is due to the formation of the crack. [Pg.321]

This flow system is based on SIA technique and also uses injection valves. The sensor column flow cell was fabricated from a poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) block, where the central column channel was 3 cm long and 3 mm internal diameter (i.d.), with a volume of 212 p.1. A frit disk was placed directly into the threaded outlet of the column bed channel in order to retain scintillating sorbent beads within the sensor flow cell. The detection was performed using an online flow-through scintillation detector, in which the sensor flow cell assembly was positioned in the place of a conventional flow cell. To prevent... [Pg.258]

We now give a few mathematical details for determining the transformation (rotation) matrix. We, first begin by forming the data matrix D where the p-columns correspond to the channel numbers and the -rows correspond to the spectra. Next the data are normalized by subtracting the mean of each column (channel) and dividing by the variance to produce the modified data matrix C having elements... [Pg.178]
