Volvulus of the colon is rare in children and infants but when seen it most commonly involves the sigmoid colon, although caecal volvulus can also occur. The sigmoid colon in infants and children is often redundant and therefore the extra length is believed to be prone to twisting. In a recent review of the literature (Salas et al. 2000) the median age at presentation was 7 years, ranging from 4 h to 18 years. Volvulus of the caecum is torsion of the caecum around its own mesentery, which often results in a closed-loop obstruction. It can occur only in the small percentage (11-25%) of the population who have a developmental failure of peritoneal fixation with resultant increased mobility of the caecum (Montes and Wolf 1999). It accounts for 11% of all intestinal volvulus. It usually occurs in patients who are 30-60 years old. There may be history of previous abdominal surgery, violent cough, atony of the colon, extreme exertion, unpressurized air travel... 

Midgut volvulus usually occurs in neonates and young children and is due to an abnormal rotation or fixation of both the duodenum and colon, resulting in narrowing of the mesenteric base with potential for mid-gut volvulus (Long et al. 1996).
