By using results obtained from NMR studies, it is possible to determine all of the unknown quantities associated with the binding of Co by polyphosphate (0.125 N Co-PP solution). Cobalt polyphosphate was selected because of the large excess ultrasonic absorption found with this polyelectrolyte (see Table I) and also because NMR data are available both on Co [22] and on cobalt polyphosphate [23]. There are two possible methods of calculation. In both methods counter-ion site binding is assumed to be completely analogous to ion-pair formation. In state PCj the hydration shells of P and C are in contact but do not overlap. In state PC2 the polyion site has lost part of its hydration shell while that of the counterion remains unaffected. In state PC3 the hydration shells of both C and P are modified. The removal of water... [Pg.334]

Reactions involving the formation and hydrolysis of phosphate and polyphosphate esters are of vital importance in biological systems in which it is found that magnesium ions are almost invariably implicated. The formation and decomposition of adenosine triphosphate are the fundamental reactions involved in energy storage in living systems. In this context, it is perhaps relevant to note that the hydrolysis of ATP is enhanced, albeit in a very modest manner, by some cobalt(m) complexes. [Pg.86]

R. D. Cornelius, P. A. Hart and W. W. Cleland (Inorg. Chem., 1977, 16, 2799) discuss isomerism in cobalt(III)-polyphosphate complexes. [Pg.226]
