A wide class of aiyl-based quaternary surfactants derives from heterocycles such as pyridine and quinoline. The Aralkyl pyridinium halides are easily synthesized from alkyl halides, and the paraquat family, based upon the 4, 4 -bipyridine species, provides many interesting surface active species widely studied in electron donor-acceptor processes. Cationic surfactants are not particularly useful as cleansing agents, but they play a widespread role as charge control (antistatic) agents in detergency and in many coating and thin film related products. 

Potting. Potting of wire insulated with Tefzel has been accompHshed with the aid of a coating of a coUoidal siHca dispersion. The pots produced with a polysulfide potting compound meeting MIL-S-8516C Class 2 standards exhibit pullout strengths of 111—155 N (25—35 Ibf). 

Several classes of polymers containing the HFIP-O group have been reported. These polymers show promise as film formers, gas separation membranes, coatings, seals, and other high temperature apphcations due to the properties imparted by this function, similar in many ways to the HFIP group.

Leather-like materials now important in the market are of three main classes (/) vinyl-coated fabrics, (2) urethane-coated (synthetic) fabrics, and (J) man-made leathers. To appreciate their leather-replacement capabiUties it is necessary to know the stmcture of natural leather. 

Chromate conversion coatings are thin, noncrystalline, adherent surface layers of low solubiHty phosphoms and/or chromium compounds produced by the reaction of suitable reagents with the metal surface (2,3). The two classes of chromate coatings are chromium phosphates (green chromates) and chromium chromates (gold chromates). 

In addition to chemical and spectral sensitizers, several other classes of chemical compounds are added to emulsions before coating. Additives are used to facihtate coating operations, eg, surfactants (qv) and viscosity enhancers to reduce spontaneous development ia unexposed regions, eg, tetraazaiadenes and mercaptotetrazoles and to reduce abrasion and permit high temperature processing, eg, aldehydes (qv). 

Amino resins are used by the paper industry in large volume for a variety of apphcations. The resins are divided into two classes according to the mode of appHcation. Resins added to the fiber slurry before the sheet is formed are called wet-end additives and are used to improve wet and dry strength and stiffness. Resins appHed to the surface of formed paper or board, almost invariably together with other additives, are used to improve the water resistance of coatings, the sag resistance in ceiling tiles, and the scuff resistance in cartons and labels.
