It should be emphasized that it is necessary but not sufficient for Ef(Q) -Ej(Q) to be small over an appreciable range of geometries this only guarantees that the denominator in Eq. (13) is small. It is also necessary that Ef(Q) - E,(Q) decrease at a significant rate as the point of closest approach is reached this is why we say the surfaces must approach closely. Viewed another way, if Ef(Q)... [Pg.292]

Closed-circuit television (CCTV) systems magnify print and small objects up to 60 times, with higher effective magnifications possible by close viewing. Users with vision as poor as 1/400 (20/8000) may be able to read ordinary print with CCTV [Fonda, 1981]. Some recent units are portable and contain black/white image reversal and contrast enhancement features. [Pg.1174]

Mars didn t have the same problem as Venus—it had its own problems. We know more about Mars than Venus because probes sent to Mars aren t crushed into electronic slush, and the Martian atmosphere is helpfully transparent to our telescopes and probes. A series of rovers, culminating in the Curiosity mission, has given us a close view of Martian geology and has offered clues as to where all that water went. [Pg.62]
