Classifications of Fuel Cells Based on Electrolytes

Just before and after the World War II, design engineers and material scientists extensively focused their efforts on fuel cells to improve the overall performance of the devices. In doing so, they concentrated their design efforts on the development of fuel cells using various types of fuels, electrode configurations, and electrolytes. Using all these disciplines, the scientists have classified six distinct types of fuel cells, which are identified as follows  [Pg.88]

Alkaline fuel cell Phosphoric acid fuel cell [Pg.88]

High-temperature fuel cells using hydrogen fuel offer optimum performance irrespective of current density in terms of moderately higher efficiency, reliability, and operational costs. In addition, methane does not participate directly in the electrochemical reaction. Both methanol and methane yield poor performance when the [Pg.89]
