Classification of silicates

The chemical classification of silicates is based on their multiplicity and type of structural arrangement. It partly differs from the classification commonly adopted in mineralogy (table 5.2). [Pg.221]

A classification of silicates with predominantly two-dimensional cross-linking of [SiOJ tetrahedra leads to the trichotomy presented in Figures 2 and 3. Layered silicate hydrates, disilicates, and clay minerals differ in the repetitive characteristic binding element within the layers. The silicon oxygen tetrahedra within a sheet are connected by three bridging oxygen atoms. In the case of clay minerals, the fourth valency is saturated by foreign metal ions (e.g., Mg +)... [Pg.550]

Polyhedra in crystal structures (see Section 10.3) can be used as elements of simpler networks formed by common comers, edges or even faces. Many structures can now be classified into island, chain, sheet and framework stmctures (see Figure 4), Very impressive examples are the classification of silicates, of oxides and oxysalts, or of metals and alloys. ... [Pg.1333]
