The original objective of the ISO classification was to issue detailed standards for cemented carbides in terms of microstmcture, composition, and properties for quaUty control and performance rehabiUty. This objective, however, is yet to be realized. Increased emphasis on worldwide implementation of ISO 9000 standards and globalization of manufacturing, may lead the industry-at-large to adopt the ISO classification.

More recently (2006) we performed and reported quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) modeling of the same compounds based on their atomic linear indices, for finding fimctions that discriminate between the tyrosinase inhibitor compounds and inactive ones [50]. Discriminant models have been applied and globally good classifications of 93.51 and 92.46% were observed for nonstochastic and stochastic hnear indices best models, respectively, in the training set. The external prediction sets had accuracies of 91.67 and 89.44% [50]. In addition to this, these fitted models have also been employed in the screening of new cycloartane compounds isolated from herbal plants. Good behavior was observed between the theoretical and experimental results. These results provide a tool that can be used in the identification of new tyrosinase inhibitor compounds [50]. 

As already mentioned, use of a less-than-optimal ANN leaves the researcher wondering whether any failures in classification are attributable to the non-optimized architecture rather than a consequence of limitations in spectral quality or information content. Complete architecture optimization by manual trial and error is possible but usually impractical. The PD-ANN s ability to develop a global optimum configuration/solution for distinguishing a set of bacterial strains allows the researcher to probe the limits of spectral information content with respect to questions of inherent taxonomic power.

The United Nations Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS) includes an internationally standardized guidance procedure on Transformation/Dissolution Protocol (T/DP) for metals and sparingly soluble metal compounds (United Nations, 2007), recently validated by the OECD (Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development). To establish the acute aquatic hazard classification level of a metal-bearing substance under the GHS, data from the T/DP are compared with an acute ecotoxicity reference value (ERV) derived under conditions similar to those of the T/DP.

Erom Stern Stewart s list of the top 1,000 MVA creators for 2002, we eliminated 138 companies classified as REITs, banks, diversified financials, or insurance companies by Global Industry Classification Standard codes. Thus, we began with 862 companies. 

ICSCs are a potential tool for the implementation of the Globally Harmonized System (GHS) for the labeling and classification of chemicals as they contain the necessary hazard data for this purpose.
